Rene McLean

Founding Advisor

Rene McLean is a music executive, entrepreneur and Billboard “Branding Power Player” (2019) who has spent more than two decades innovating and implementing methods to amplify and connect through music. He founded and leads the culture and tech forward music company SLANG, focused on providing new or developing artists with tools to grow and brands a pathway to connect with consumers. In recent years, he launched a fully integrated distribution system to help artists share their music and collect earnings across more platforms and oversaw his team’s negotiation and execution of multi-million-dollar partnerships for top brands like Pepsi and Belvedere Vodka.

Prior to launching SLANG, Rene began his career in the ‘90s at leading labels like Virgin, RCA, Elektra and Interscope Records, where he played a pivotal role in the early marketing strategies for now-iconic acts like Eminem, Missy Elliott and Busta Rhymes. He also helped pioneer the modern field-marketing model at various labels, which became a guiding principle for RPM, the music marketing & management firm he founded in 2000.

With RPM, Rene quickly established himself as an independent visionary. He consulted with the likes of Pharrell Williams, Timbaland & Swizz Beatz on their careers, created the tastemaking Power Summit (which Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Kanye West used to launch new projects) and eventually expanded the company’s scope into cultural marketing with blue-chip brand clients like Pepsi, Xbox, GM, HBO & MTV.

But the expansion didn’t stop there. Utilizing the same forward-thinking vision that he applied to record-label marketing, Rene opened RPM MSC, a new kind of music company for a new music industry. By centralizing all the elements of a label, management, bookings & media- creating a nimble, full-immersive company that specialized in guiding new talent to astonishing success. This was perhaps exemplified by the discovery of LMFAO, taking the duo from Internet obscurity to GRAMMY-nominated, global sensation with multiple Hot 100 No. 1 hits.
